WELCOME TO PERCUSSION CREED
First, I would like to give an explanation about the symbol named NKYINKYIM that I am using as logo.
It is a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol, meaning twistings.
“This is the symbol of toughness, adaptability, devotion to service and grace under hardship. It also symbolizes initiative, dynamism, and versatility. It stresses the need to adapt to life, moving oneself around difficulties in order successfully fulfills one's duty.”The reason I have chosen this symbol is because it describes my character as a person and my life. I strongly believe that these are the ingredients to achieve each one of your dreams.
The wonderful thing about life is when you realize that the competition you have is with yourself and nobody else! You have to focus on becoming the best you, in everything you want to do.The best you, is always unique. Because, thank God, there are no two persons who are the same. Each person is a unique individual. The best you, will always attract others to try you out, to see what you got. If they liked what you got, than you’re in. And believe me, they will try you out, in a very nice way, but you will be tested...!
That is why I would like to teach you how to be ready, to be the best you and to achieve your dream.
One of my dreams I wanted to achieve was to study music and to be able to perform with some of the best musicians around the world. And humbly, I have to say that I have achieved more than I expected.
However, now is the time to achieve another dream.
To go back home, the beautiful island of Curaçao, and to try to establish a percussion school.
I wanted to share my experience with especially the young kids and everybody else.
In the near future I will let everybody know what are my plans and projects.
A special and deeply thanks goes to my wife Tatiana Felix for as soon as I told her, I believe it is time for me to go to Curaçao to teach and share my knowledge, without me asking her, she made a website in one week and was the one who approached me with the name of the school and the logo.
Sincerely yours
Pernell Saturnino

It is important when you learn rhythms to start from the roots, to learn some history about the rhythms. In other words, it is very important to learn the culture surrounding each rhythm. It will help you to understand each rhythm better and it will help you to feel, to articulate and express the rhythms as close as possible to the percussionists of those countries.
While studying and being around other musicians, I always heard them say that percussionist are always late for gigs, their tempo is not good, they like to play to loud and they cannot read music. Cuban percussionists only play Cuban music; Brazilian percussionists only play Brazilian music…etc.
My personal light bulb turned on…
Luckily, my love to learn as much rhythms from other countries as possible was already there, and while practicing, I focused on all the details that I have mentioned above.
In my teaching, I will focus on these rhythms and details:
The rhythms from:
- Cuba
- Brazil
- Puerto Rico
- Peru
- Curaçao
- Dominican Republic
- Trinidad and Uruguay to mention a few.
I will be focusing also on:
- How to play soft, with the same intensity and good tempo.
- To read music first sight.
- And later on, how to adjust the rhythms into Jazz music.
- To play in odd meters and how to build a solo.

What is percussion?
I know many of you are wondering what is percussion.
Well, it’s very simple. Percussion means, to beat or to strike in a musical way.
A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound by being hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context or with musical intent.
Of course, there are various types of percussion instruments and many categories.
For example:
You have percussion instruments, which make sounds through vibration e.g Guiro, cymbals, triangle and of course the chapi. You have those instruments, which make sounds by hitting their membrane, like congas, djembe, tambú, bongos, snare drum, bass drum on so on.
If I have to write about every percussion instrument there is, I will never stop writing. So, if you are curious to know more about what is percussion and percussion instruments, just Google them. I am sure you will find a bunch of stuff on the Internet.
Now, after reading a little bit about percussion and percussion instruments, are you now curious to try it out for yourself and see what happens? Do not hesitate to drop by and visit percussion creed - school of percussion.
Our goal is to give everybody the chance to explore those inner secret desires of being a famous drummer or conga player. Every time you hear that song and in your imagination you are the drummer, and you start doing the movements on your legs. Just make your dream come true and come and try it out. You could get a free try out on different instruments, and if you like you can apply and start taking lessons right away.
There will be private lessons and group classes.
In the future, there will be also some fun project plans for all students. I will mention those when the time is right.
Children from 8 years and older are welcome to apply for the school. However there will be exception for children younger than 8, depend on their talent and behavior. Of course, adults are also welcome to take classes.
Also in the near future I will start to teach thru Skype for especially my international students.
